How to troubleshoot the Backup Exec System Recovery (BESR) "Offsite Copy" option.

horizontal rule

Details:

The following may be used to troubleshoot ftp connectivity and account permissions from the client:

Troubleshoot Offsite ftp connection by creating a file named test.txt on the root of the c:\ drive. This will be used to test account access.

1. Enable logging for ftp "Offsite Copy"
2. Credentials provided allow access to the ftp location.
3. Credentials provided allow copying files to the ftp location.
4. Credentials provided allow removing files from the ftp location.
If the job is modified to reduce the number of recovery points to keep, this will be synchronized at the time the Offsite Copy is completed.

1. Enable logging for ftp Offsite Copy:

-Create a text file named "1" (without quotes and no extension) here: \Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec System Recovery\Agent\
-Restart the Backup Exec System Recovery service.
-Create and run the job which includes the Offsite Copy option.
-After the process, review the "FTPAccessor.log" file.
-Be aware: Once logging is enabled, the log will continue to grow. To disable logging, remove the "1" file from the Agent folder and restart the BESR service.

2. Credentials provided allow access to the ftp location.

At the root of the c:\ volume at a command prompt do the following:

1. Type: "ftp <Host>" <press enter>
2. A prompt asking for the user name appears. Enter User name <press enter>
3. A prompt asking for the password appears. Enter the password <press enter>
4. Once connected you will see a message indicating the user is logged in.

If these credentials cannot be used, check with the ftp server administrator for appropriate access.

3. Credentials provided allow copying files to the ftp location

Copy a file to the ftp server by typing the following:

1. Type: "Put c:\test.txt" (without quotes) <press enter>
2. "Transfer complete" will show when this completes.

If the files cannot be copied using these credentials, check with the ftp server administrator for appropriate access.

4. Credentials provided allow removing files from the ftp location.

1. Type: "Delete test.txt" (without quotes) <press enter>
2. The Message: "DELE command successful" show when this finishes.

If the files cannot be deleted using these credentials, check with the ftp server administrator for appropriate access.

NOTES:

-The VProSvc.exe (Backup Exec System Recovery Service) initiates the ftp Offsite Copy process.
-Some FTP servers require a different level of access to create folders. BESR needs this access in order to synchronize folders on an ftp server.
-Synchronization (replication) occurs from the primary (where recovery points are being stored) to the Offsite location (BESR history determines this synchronization).
-If recovery points have manually been deleted from the Offsite location, during the next Offsite Copy BESR would copy most recent recovery point first and then the next most recent and so on.
-During synchronization, to preserve Offsite space, deletions of oldest recovery point occur first. The most recent recovery point is copied first, then the next most recent and so on.
-If the account being used allows connecting, copying, and deleting files, the BESR Offsite copy should work properly.
