Windows 2000 Paperport Manual Clean Uninstall

How do I...

Manually Clean Uninstall Paperport from Windows 2000?

Answer:

Warning: If you have Paperport 9 installed, you must install the service pack 3 before uninstalling or you may get an "ntloader missing" error when you try to boot up your PC.
For more information and to download service pack 3 for Paperport 9, click PaperPort 9 Deluxe Service Pack 3.

  1. Uninstall the Scanner Driver and PaperPort

    1. Click on "Start" then "Control Panel" and "Add/Remove Programs".
    2. Select "Visioneer OneTouch" or the scanner model (example: Strobe XP100) and click "Add/Remove" or "Change/Remove"
    3. Select "Automatic" and click "Next".
    4. Repeat the steps above to remove PaperPort. Choose "Yes" when asked to remove thumbnails.

  2. Remove your scanner from Device Manager.

    1. Go to "Start" then "Run" and type "devmgmt.msc". Click "OK" or "Run".
    2. Look for "Imaging Devices" in the list and click the plus next to it so it opens.
    3. Remove your scanner by right clicking on your scanner and click "Uninstall".

  3. Unplug your scanner from the USB port

If you have a parallel or serial scanner, disconnect the scanner.  DO NOT reconnect it until you finish installing the software and shut down the computer. When you boot up with the software installed it will detect the scanner and use the driver that has been installed already.

  4. The Registry

Backup the Registry BEFORE you make any changes. Unintended changes may cause damage to your OS. If you make unintended changes to the registry you can restore by double clicking the reg file you saved.  Some of the keys listed below may not be available. This is not a problem.  Move on to the next key.

    1. Backup the Registry:

      1. Go to "Start" then "Run" and type "regedit" and then click "OK"
      2. Go to "Registry" in the menu bar at the top and then to "Export Registry"
      3. Check "All" for the range and give the file a name such as today's date.
      4. Save it to your desktop. It will appear with a .reg extension. This is your backup file.
      5. Close the registry window when you are done.
      6. Do not double click it or registry changes will be reverted. If you do double click, It will ask you if you are sure you want to merge it so you will have a chance to Cancel.
      7. Later, when everything is working, you can delete this file.

    2. Removing the USB registry keys (this does not apply to parallel or serial scanners).

      1. Click "Start" then "Run" and type "regedt32" then click "OK".
      2. Look for the window titled "Hkey_Local_Machine on Local Machine" and then go to "System\CurrentControlSet\Enum\USB" by double clicking on each folder in the path.

      3. Under USB, you will find folders that start with VID_.

      4. Look for any VIDs that start with or have these exact IDs.

        bulletVID_0000&PID_0000
        bulletVID_0451&PID_2036
      5. Once you find the VIDs that contain the above IDs

      4. You will see some folders numbered from "0000" and on.

      5. Click just once on each of these folders (not the plus sign) and look for "DriverDesc" in the right pane. To the far right from "DeviceDesc" you will see a description. If you see any Visioneer products listed, delete the numbered folder you selected to find this info.

      6. Go to "Edit" then "Delete" at the top menu. Choose "Yes" when asked if you are sure.

You will delete a folder that is located inside "c:\winnt\twain_32" or on some systems "c:\windows\twain_32". This folder will have your scanners model number for its name or "vizscan". Examples are "Xp100", "Xp200", and sometimes "paprport". DO NOT delete the "Twain_32 folder" itself or "twain_32.dll" file. Continue with the next step if the "twain_32" folder is not present.

    2. Click "OK"
    3. Delete only folders associated with your scanner model number.

      bulletvisioneer.inf file
      bulletonetouch.pnf file
    4. Also remove any files that contain "stbxp", "visioneer" or "onetouch"

  7. Remove all occurrences of PaperPort from your computer.

    1. Go to "Start" and choose "Explore".

    2. In Windows Explorer, go to the "C:" drive and then to "Program Files" folder.

    3. Locate the "Visioneer" or "Visioneer OneTouch" folder in the Program Files folder and delete it.

    4. Open the "ScanSoft" folder.(also located in Program Files)

    5. If "PaperPort" is the only subfolder, delete "ScanSoft". If you have other subfolders, delete ONLY the "PaperPort" folder.

    6. In Windows Explorer, locate the "C:\Paprport" folder if it is available.

    7. Open the "PaprPort" folder and copy the "Data" folder to another location.
This Data folder contains your scans using older versions of PaperPort. If you don't find the folder, it is OK.  You have a newer version of PaperPort and your files are stored in the "My Documents" folder under "My Scansoft Documents".

    8. Delete the "C:\PaprPort" folder once the "Data" folder has been saved.

    9. Empty the Recycle Bin

  8. Clean out your "temp" directory:

    1. Go to "Start" then "Programs" then "Accessories" then "System Tools" and "Disk Cleanup".

    2. Select your default drive (in most cases this is the C: drive). All of your temp files are displayed.

    3. Uncheck "Downloadable Files".

    4. Make sure that you don't normally save things to your temp items folder.

    5. Click "OK" to clean out your temp files.

  9. Remove maxlink.ini

    1. Go to "Start" then "Find" then " "Files or Folders".

    2. In Filename type "maxlink.ini".

    3. Select the "C:\" drive to search under.

    4. Delete the "maxlink.ini" file(s).

  10. Reinstallation:

    1. Make sure to shut off any system protection software such as "Norton Anti Virus" or applications like "Clean Sweep" before you start the installation.

    2. You can now run the installation from the CD.

    3. If you have a driver you downloaded and want to install it instead, then cancel the "Visioneer License Agreement" during the installation. Do Not connect the scanner and allow "Paperport" to finish its installation. Install the driver you downloaded and connect the scanner when asked.

    4. When you reinstall the driver, it will ask for Registration. You cannot skip this or it will cancel the driver installation. Complete the registration form and click "Next". If you are on dial up, cancel the dialer that will pop up. Sometimes it will take a long time (up to 1 min or whatever you have your timeout set to.) to timeout when it is trying to connect, so be patient. You will get a message that it was not able to connect and it will finish the installation.

  11. If you are having issues with the installation not finding files, try disabling Hidden Files/Folders with the instructions below.

    1. Go to "Start" then "Run" and type "control folders". Click "OK".
    2. Go to "View" tab and in the "Advanced Settings" box look for "Hidden files and folders"
    3. Place a check in "Show hidden files and folders" and also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files".

  12. The install will now ask you to connect the scanner:

    1. Make sure you see the message "Found New Hardware". If you do not see this message then plug the scanner into another USB port untill you see the message "Found New Hardware". Wait 10 seconds after you connect the scanner before you click the "Finish" button.
    2. If you donít see this message on any port, it means that your USB cannot detect the hardware. If you do not get this message on any port, click "Finish" anyway and shut down your PC. Once shut down, connect the scanner to any USB port and turn the PC back on. You should now get the "Found New Hardware" message and it will configure itself. Some models may require that you complete a "Found New Hardware Wizard". Select the recommended option to have it search for the best driver.
    3. If you already installed "PaperPort" and the driver from the CD, but you want to install the latest driver, go to "Start" then "Control Panel" then "Add/Remove Programs" and uninstall "OneTouch", "Visioneer Scanner Driver", or the model number of your scanner (Strobe xp100 for example). Unplug your scanner. Then Reboot your PC and then run the installation with the latest driver. "OneTouch" may require configuration the first time you run it.
    4. Some chipsets such as "VIA rev 5" and "SiS" are known to have issues detecting scanners.
Click here for help with USB issues if you still can't get the scanner detected.
    5. Make sure that you are installing directly to the computer and not through a hub, since the hub may be the source of the problem. A hub also has a chipset which can introduce another point of failure.
    6. Although you may have had multiple scanners on your PC at one time, we are not able to provide support for this configuration. We are not familiar with other manufacturers software so trying to make it all work may not be possible since the applications may compete for the same resources.

  13. In "Paperport" make sure that you have the proper source (scanner) selected.

    1. In Paperport 7 or below:

      1. Go to "File" then "Select Source".
      2. Click on "Scan Manager" and then click the "Select" button.
    2. In Paperport 8 or above:
      1. Click on the "Scan" button at the top.
      2. A new panel will appear to the left with another Scan button and a Scanner section that has a drop down to select your scanner.
      3. Select "Scan Manager" and try scanning.

  14. Youíre Done.
